Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara is an enhanced re-release of Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom and Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara. Besides the obvious differences like gamepad support, leaderboards or internet multiplayer, the most important enhancement is the addition of house rules: after beating the game once, players can activate optional rules like items with infinite durability, the player character heals when killing an enemy or a time attack mode. After solving challenges like killing a certain number of enemies, the player unlocks bonus items like concept drawings. This version also introduces infinite continues and a few additional video modes which simulate things like scanlines or CRT monitors.
Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom is a 2D side-scrolling, weapon-based beat’em up game set in the Dungeons & Dragons Mystara campaign setting. The game has some slight RPG elements taken from the tabletop role-playing game. At the start of the game you can pick between 4 characters: cleric, dwarf, elf, and fighter. The game is very similar to Golden Axe – players go right, slash enemies (and various bosses) and use magic or additional weapons. Daggers, hammers, arrows and burning oil can be used as throwing weapons.
Shadow over Mystara is a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom. Two years have passed since the heroes defeated Arch Lich Deimos, but now a new threat has arisen – a powerful sorceress Synn who is plotting to conquer the Republic of Darokin.
Shadow over Mystara is a side-scrolling beat-’em-up with role-play elements that make it stand out from other similar games released at the time. The game is set in Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting of Mystara and features monsters, areas and playable characters typical to D&D adventures. There are six playable characters to choose from: Cleric, Dwarf, Elf, Fighter, Thief, and Mage – each with unique abilities, strengths and weaknesses. The characters can equip different gear and weapons, use special abilities. Magic-users have a wide range of magic spells. The characters are awarded with new spells and abilities as they gain experience. Many game mechanics are realized according to D&D rules, for example, the thief can detect trapped chests and cleric can turn undead. The game has branching paths and a variety of endings.
Shadow over Mystara features up to four-player cooperative play.
