PoPoRogue is set two years after the events of PoPoLoCrois. The child prince Pietro Pakapuka is becoming a teenager and he craves the adventures he previously had, He sneaks outside of his castle residence and once he gets out into the open areas outside the castle he gets tired and takes a nap. However. he is woken up by a violent change in weather and then witnesses his castle and its surrounding kingdom get teleported to a now unknown land. The king creates an exploratory team to research this new land but the majority wind up lost after an appearance of a monster. Prince Pietro decides its up to him to relocate those who went missing and figure out what is going on thus he heads out into a new adventure.
While Pietro starts out alone he can hire mercenaries to accompany him into battle. There are over twenty characters that can be recruited this way, however only two at a time are allowed to join during actual combat and when in combat will be controlled by the game’s AI. Other mercenaries can be hired but only in a supplemental role were they can be sent out on an expedition where they can gain experience and bring back money and items.
While traversing the land and its many dungeons, there are monsters roaming on screen that can either be interacted with to start combat with or ran around to avoid a tussle. Combat in the game is grid based. Spells in the game can be leveled up by consistently casting them.
New to the series is that the dungeons are now mostly randomized every time they are entered. Only key areas in a dungeon remain constant.
The game also offers a plentiful amount of side quests to engage in plus an additional bonus fifty story dungeon to complete after the regular game is finished. It offers powerful items and can be explored with some new mercenary characters, with a new final boss awaiting those with the tenacity to get to it.
