Avadon: The Black Fortress

Avadon: The Black Fortress is a role playing game done in standard Spiderweb style; long, sprawling, with plenty of story and loads of maps to explore. The player becomes a warrior of the Midlands Pact, an alliance of 5 nations surrounded on all sides by enemies in the Farlands. The story begins when you arrive at Avadon to serve as a Hand under Keeper Redbeard. Protect Avadon, and the Pact, or not.

To start the game you pick one of four character classes: Blademaster (fighter depending on armor and weapons), Shadow Walker (like a thief in AD&D), Shaman (like a druid in AD&D), Sorceress (dependent on magic). You can also pick one of four difficulty levels.

Once the game is in progress you are free to roam about speaking to characters, gathering (possibly stealing) items, and generally exploring each map as they open up to the player. Eventually it will be possible to freely explore the world of Lynaeus as more locations are discovered and the world map becomes available.

Combat is turn-based and it is similar to the Geneforge games. You can choose close combat, ranged combat, or magic spells to dispatch enemies. Some characters are able to summon creatures. Experience points accumulate until a new level is reached and they can be used to customize the character.

One key feature of this game is the inclusion of multiple endings based an choices and alliances made through out the adventure.
