Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons is a 1-player roleplaying game for the TRS-80.

Old legends speak of a large blue-white diamond hidden deep in the catacombs of Khazad ‘Dum. Dozens of men have attempted to find this jewel, but none have ever returned. Your success will be based on your skill as a fighter and your ability to escape from its many traps.

The player takes on the role of a fighter, and their skill is based upon their dexterity and strength. Dexterity expresses ability to hit, while strength is a measure of hit points. Armor class is determined by equipment worn. The player chooses from 7 different levels of weapons and 8 levels of armor. At the beginning of a game, the player chooses the character’s name, god, and randomly roles the 3 stats and gold. A weapon can be purchased before entering the dungeon. The player starts with torches to keep the dungeon lit, and eleven cakes which can restore hit points.

During combat, the player’s dexterity determines if they can attack, and the player must chose which weapon to use. Weapons can break, leaving the player with only their firsts, which can also break leaving a player unable to further fight. There are different available attacks, and the player can pray to their god if things looks drastic.

The dungeon is explored via text commands, and the player can move north, south, east, or west. Each room is described via text, and they may contain random encounters which the player can try to avoid. Fixed monsters including a demon, a troll, a stone giant, a vampire, and a gargoyle provide special treasure. Also in the dungeon is a dragon, which holds the prized jewel, which can only be defeated with a magic lamp. If the player runs out of torches, they perish in the darkness.
